What is psychotherapy? How is it different from psychiatry?
Psychotherapy is “talk therapy.” You meet with a therapist and explore issues of concern and learn new skills to cope.
Psychiatry is practiced by a licensed physician and typically involves an evaluation to determine whether medication is warranted in addressing the issue at hand. Psychiatrists rarely engage in counseling these days.
Referrals for a psychiatric evaluation (medication) are made when necessary.
What can I expect in the first session?
Our first session together will last for 90 minutes. This gives us time to get to know one another, begin to develop an understanding of what’s going on, and look towards formulating a plan of action that will help you to reach your goals. We will also go over forms that I have sent you in advance and examine your previous history.
What about follow up sessions?
The second and subsequent sessions will last for 50 minutes. Beginning with the second session, we will create a treatment plan that will guide our time together going forward.
Will my spouse/partner need to come?
